Colombian Coffee Denomination of Origin

There are several instruments that guarantee Colombian coffee origin. In some countries where the Colombian coffee is recognized by denominations of origin, certain rules and regulations apply that are essentially similar to those applied by other origin-guarantee instruments.  For European countries, the implemented legal instrument for the Colombian coffee quality protection is known as the "Protected Geographical Indication", and is similar to the one that identifies other European products of great worldwide recognition. Finally, in North American countries, Colombian coffee is protected as a Certification Mark; while brand-ingredient programs have been designed as complementary strategies of Colombian origin guarantees throughout all continents.

A Designation of Origin (DO) is a distinctive sign consisting of a specific geographical name used to identify product (s) that originate in the referred place and whose quality is directly linked to that the origin there mentioned. In order to obtain the DO protection recognition, it is not enough to submit an application to the authorities of the country where the protection is claimed. It is also necessary to attach to the application form a whole series of data, information and documents demonstrating the close lin

k between the origin and the quality of the product. In the case of Colombian coffee,  the registration of DOs has been preceded by enormous efforts that have given its recognition across many areas. Therefore, not all products are eligible for bearing a DO recognition.

Denominations of Origin are a form of legal protection that allows product authenticity guarantees to customers and attest that goods identified with a DO complies with the processes and quality requirements associated with that denomination, beginning with the actual provenance of the noted origin. In this way, the consumer is confident of the quality he is paying for, and the producer is properly rewarded for his efforts in producing a superior product that meets the denomination's standards. Any imitation or evocation of a DO, without complying with its legal requirements, constitutes an infringement of the country’s laws that have declared the DO protection.

Due to the Federation’s leadership, the quality of Colombian-grown coffee has been demonstrated to be closely related to specific conditions of climate, location and environmental arrangements, but also to the careful production processes associated with coffee. These are both natural and human factors that essentially determine the quality of the product, which have consequently been assessed by authorities abroad before granting special protection to the products.

As a consequence of such assessment, a superior quality and prestige was forged arisen from consumer appeal. As a result, the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC), declared the protection of DO Café de Colombia in 2005, responding to the Federation’s claim for the protection’s feasibility. Well along, the same entity decided to protect coffee from Cauca, Nariño, Huila and Santander regions.

Nowadays, the Federation manages the Colombian coffee DO's, which allows it to grant the respective authorizations to the users that certify their products.

The Federation’s efforts achieved the Colombian coffee recognition, next to 22 products that are now protected, and that may legitimately use the official seal implemented for Colombian appellations of origin.
