Colombian Coffee Production was 944,000 Bags in March

In first quarter of the year, production increased 9% compared to first quarter of 2015 and exports grew 13%, but April will begin to reflect the effects of the intense El Niño event that has troubled Colombian coffee farming.

Colombia, the world’s leading producer of mild washed Arabica coffee, produced a total of 944,000 60-kilo bags in March 2016, an 18% increase compared to the 800,000 bags produced in March 2015.

Production in first quarter was nearly 3.2 million bags, a 9% increase compared to the 2.9 million bags produced between January and March 2015.

The crop volume in the first quarter of the year includes coffee produced during the last quarter of 2015 and the first months of 2016, which only entered the market in recent months. It is estimated that April will begin to reflect the effects of the intense El Niño event that has troubled Colombian coffee farming.

A field study conducted by the Extension Service of the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) in a representative sample of 7,048 farms enabled to measure the strong impact in the short, medium and longer term of El Niño on coffee plantations.

During the last 12 months (April 2015-March 2016), coffee production reached 14.4 million 60-kilo bags, a 17% increase compared to the 12.3 million bags harvested in the same previous period.

So far this coffee year (October 2015-March 2016), Colombian coffee production was 7.3 million bags, an 18% increase compared to the 6.2 million bags produced between October 2014 and March 2015.

In the current situation of El Niño, the FNC has not only adopted economic relief measures for coffee farmers, but it has intensified campaigns to control the CBB, which in drought periods reproduces more easily.

Colombian coffee exports were nearly 1.1 million 60-kilo bags in March 2016, a 37% significant increase compared to the 786,000 bags exported in March 2015.

First-quarter exports were almost 3.3 million bags, a 13% increase compared to the 2.9 million bags exported between January and March 2015.

During the last 12 months (April 2015-March 2016), coffee exports rose 19% by reaching 13.1 million 60-kilo bags.

And so far this coffee year (October 2015-March 2016), Colombian coffee exports were nearly 6.8 million bags, a 14% increase compared to the 5.9 million bags exported during the same previous period.
