2,350 UTZ Certified Farms in Colombia

The UTZ certification program supported by the FNC has been going on for 7 years since in 2004. The first UTZ certification given to a farm in South America was in Colombia (Colombia).

During these years, large farms and small groups of coffee growers have joined the UTZ scheme, which has allowed them to obtain important improvements. Through its focus on Good Agricultural Practices (BPA), better administrative management of farms and the continuous improvement system –with a prioritization of prominent challenges thanks to gained knowledge-, a larger number of coffee farms have obtained the UTZ certification. The shift in the farm management also encourages a change in attitude of producers and their families. The Colombian Coffee Growers Federation encourages and accompanies these processes with resources and technical assistance.

This is how the FNC, currently and through the programs it supports, has been able to maintain more than 2,350 UTZ certified in 11 coffee-producing departments. Chief among them for the number of farms and their influx in the national UTZ offer are Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda, Antioquia and Huila. Likewise, some other regions have been incorporated; this is the case of Norte de Santander, Magdalena and Cesar-Guajira, regions where smallholder coffee-growers have adopted this protocol.
