In recent date, Japan’s Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, visited headquarters of Café de Colombia, in Bogotá, within the framework of the IX Meeting of the Japan-Colombia Joint Economic Committee, what confirms importance of Colombian coffee in the bilateral commercial relationship.

In the opening session of the meeting, the FNC CEO, Luis G. Muñoz, as president of the Colombia-Japan Economic Committee, highlighted that the long and fructiferous coffee trade relationship between both countries has satisfactorily evolved from green coffee exports to other value-added products, because of an increasingly sophisticated and exigent demand.

This growing and dynamic penetration in higher value segments in Japan has occurred by the hand of Japanese companies, Muñoz noted, also wishing the re-entry of Japan into the International Coffee Organization (ICO), as this will contribute to a better understanding between producing and consuming countries.

In 2013 Japan was the fourth largest coffee importer in the world with 8 million bags, following the US, Germany and Italy. It is the second largest buyer of Colombian coffee, just after the US, with 1.1 million annual bags on average in past years.

Café de Colombia has encouraged sales of differentiated and specialty coffees to Japan and currently 50% of green coffee sales to this country are value-added.
